Fact: “Serious Needs Assistance” is a financial benefit FEMA provides to all disaster survivors that qualify. This initial payment helps cover immediate needs before FEMA evaluates your eligibility for other disaster assistance programs. The funds are flexible and can be used for essential items such as:
This payment is separate from and does not affect other benefits you may qualify for. As FEMA continues to review your application, you might receive additional assistance for needs like temporary housing, personal property replacement, and home repairs.
If you have questions about your disaster assistance application or what you’re eligible for, call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362. They can assist you in your preferred language.
Important Note: FEMA has increased the maximum amount for initial Serious Needs Assistance to $770. This new limit applies to disasters declared on or after October 1, 2024. FEMA reviews and adjusts these amounts each year when the new fiscal year begins on October 1.
Fact: This benefit is a grant and not a loan. You do not need to pay it back.
Fact: FEMA has no authority to seize private property. If you qualify, FEMA’s housing assistance is entirely voluntary. You can choose whether to accept or decline any offered aid. If your home is uninhabitable due to a disaster, FEMA may offer temporary housing solutions if you qualify. This assistance can include:
If temporary housing is offered, you decide whether to accept it. There’s no forced relocation. FEMA’s mission is to support disaster survivors, not to displace them. Their programs aim to help people return to safe, sanitary, and functional housing.
Important Note: Any temporary housing assistance from FEMA is time-limited and designed to bridge the gap until more permanent solutions are available.
